A Surprisingly Good Small Business Network Stack — Not Sponsored

Small-business networking occupies an awkward middle ground. Consumer routers are often too limited, while traditional enterprise systems can be expensive and unnecessarily complicated. This UniFi stack offers a practical alternative for an office with a gigabit internet connection: the Cloud Gateway Fiber, Standard 48 PoE switch, and U7 Pro XG access point. Together, they provide centralized management, substantial device capacity, business-grade network controls, and plenty of physical ports. The components are not perfectly balanced for multi-gigabit networking, but they form a strong and relatively approachable gigabit office network.

Cloud Gateway Fiber: Serious Routing Headroom

The router’s official model name is the Cloud Gateway Fiber, or UCG-Fiber—not “UGC Fiber.” Its 5 Gbps figure refers to routing throughput with IDS/IPS security enabled, rather than cellular 5G. That gives a business running a one-gigabit internet service considerable performance headroom. The gateway supports more than 50 managed UniFi devices and over 500 simultaneously connected users. Its interfaces include one 10G SFP+ and one 10 GbE RJ45 default WAN port, four 2.5 GbE RJ45 ports, and another 10G SFP+ connection. It also supports the full UniFi application suite and optional NVMe storage of up to 2 TB for camera recording. The U.S. list price was $279.

Standard 48 PoE: Practical Port Density

The USW-48-POE is a managed, rack-mounted Layer 2 switch with 48 one-gigabit Ethernet ports. Thirty-two of those ports provide PoE+ power, supported by a shared 195-watt power budget. That is enough connectivity for access points, phones, cameras, printers, workstations, and other office equipment without filling the rack with individual power adapters. The switch also includes four 1G SFP ports, supports up to 1,000 VLANs, and offers 104 Gbps of switching capacity with 52 Gbps of non-blocking throughput. Management features include link aggregation, spanning tree, 802.1X control, DHCP snooping, port isolation, traffic limiting, and voice VLAN support. Its fanless cooling is particularly useful when the network rack is located near employees. The U.S. list price was $589.

U7 Pro XG: High-Capacity WiFi 7

The U7 Pro XG is a ceiling- or wall-mounted WiFi 7 access point with six spatial streams. Ubiquiti rates it for more than 300 clients and approximately 1,500 square feet of coverage. It uses 2×2 MU-MIMO radios across the 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz bands. Published maximum data rates are 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, 4.3 Gbps on 5 GHz, and 5.8 Gbps on 6 GHz, although actual client performance will depend on distance, interference, channel width, and device capabilities. The access point includes a 10 GbE RJ45 interface, requires PoE+, and consumes up to 22 watts, making it compatible with the switch’s powered ports. It also supports guest isolation, fast roaming, captive portals, wireless meshing, schedules, and centralized radio management. The U.S. list price was $199.

The Important Bottleneck

This stack makes the most sense for a business using gigabit internet. The Standard 48 PoE has 1 GbE access ports and 1G SFP uplinks, so the U7 Pro XG’s 10 GbE interface will connect at only 1 GbE. A normal single connection between the gateway and switch will also be limited to one gigabit. This does not stop the access point from handling many devices or using WiFi 7 features, but it caps aggregate wired throughput. A company expecting multi-gigabit internet, frequent large file transfers to local servers, or several high-performance access points should choose a switch with 2.5 GbE ports and 10G uplinks instead.

Pricing and Verdict

Prices were looked up on August 2, 2026, through Ubiquiti’s U.S. store and exclude taxes, cabling, rack equipment, installation, and optional storage. The UCG-Fiber was $279, the USW-48-POE was $589, and the U7 Pro XG was $199, producing a hardware total of $1,067. For a small office centered on gigabit connectivity, this is a quiet, manageable, security-capable network with abundant ports and excellent wireless capacity. It is not an ideal multi-gigabit LAN, but it is a surprisingly good business stack when reliability, client density, and straightforward administration matter more than perfectly matched headline speeds.
